I've long been an avid quote collector, and thought it would be nice to share some of my favourites to do with music in all forms. So I hope you enjoy! - do please add your own.
* Use what talent you possess: the woods would be very silent if no birds sang except those that sang best. Henry Van Dyke
* Music washes away from the soul the dust of every day life. Berthold Anerbach
* Music is the only language in which you cannot say a mean or sarcastic thing. John Erskine
* Music is well said to be the speech of angels, in fact nothing among the utterances allowed to man is felt to be so divine. It brings us near to the infinite. Thomas Carlyle
* The trouble with nude dancing is that not everything stops when the music stops. Robert Helpman
* After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music. Aldous Huxley
I'll add more tomorrow if people like them! _________________

I like these Carol. I so agree with music washing away the dust of the day from your soul. It works for me most of the time.

You don't need any brains to listen to music.
Luciano Pavarotti
There are more love songs than anything else. If songs could make you do something we'd all love one another.

That's so perfect, isn't it Kar? Totally agree with you on that one. That, and the 'silence' one..."After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music." The first one is so rejuvenating, the second one gives me warm goosebumps.
Thanks Carol for the lovely concept in having this section. Music can be so beautiful, it inspires really deep, meaningful thoughts. Aled's music is the perfect proof of that.
One quote from me so far...
* If music be the food of love, play on.
William Shakespeare.

A few more....
*Music is the shorthand of emotion.
Leo Tolstoy
*Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.
Victor Hugo
*We listen to great music and know that all our joys and sorrows are part of something beyond our comprehension – and so indefinitely valuable. Jesse O’Neill
* Music is the mediator between the spiritual and the sensual life.

Glad you are enjoying them, Karen, John and Susie and thank you for your contributions - I've added them to my collection!
So four more:
*Orchestras have always played the written symphony,
Opera brings the written score into reality,
But Nature too has much to lend unto the well- tuned ear,
The bubbling stream, the whispering trees, and bird song sweet and clear.
Nature’s Music: Shirley J Edgar “This England” Winter 1976/7
* I call Architecture frozen music. Goethe 174901832 Gesprache mit Eckermann 23 Mar 1829
* What is good music? That which penetrates the ear with facility and quits the memory with difficulty. Unfortunately modern music penetrates the ear with extreme difficulty and quits the memory with unflattering facility. Sir Thomas Beecham
* All one’s life is music if one touches the notes rightly and in time. Ruskin _________________

Nothing separates the generations more than music. By the time a child is eight or nine, he has developed a passion for his own music that is even stronger than his passions for procrastination and weird clothes.

Laughter is like music
That lingers in the heart;
And when its melody is heard,
The ills of life depart. Anon

From an article in the Radio Times about the Cardiff Singer of the World competition- Sir Brian McMaster’s seven pointers to what the judges would be looking for in the winner, finishing with…
The X factor - “Some people are just touched by God, perhaps. But when you encounter it, it’s wonderful – I experienced it the first time I heard Bryn Terfel, for instance. It’s the special quality that you’re always on the look-out for. A great voice communicating in a really deep way that takes you to places you didn’t know existed. It’s an excitement that few other things in life can offer.” |
